It is extremely important to keep your teeth and braces clean during orthodontic treatment.  While in treatment, you will also want to keep your appointments with your family dentist for regular cleanings.  Patients will come to our office prior to their dental appointment so that we may remove your wires so that you can have a effective cleaning.

Dr. Harper recommends using an electronic toothbrush as well as a waterpick to keep your braces clean.  These devices are easy to use and effective.  You should brush after every meal.  Use a floss threader to floss in between each tooth and around the gum area.

It is best to avoid the following foods during orthodontic treatment:

Hard/sticky candies (Starburst, gummy bears, tootsie rolls, caramel and taffy), gum, soda or sugary drinks, nuts, ice, corn on the cob,  and jerky.
Whole fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots should be be cooked and cut into small pieces.

Recommended foods include soups, soft breads, fruit smoothies, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes.
